Default Settings / Do You Love Me [Part One]
He remembers, one time on tour in the nineties, telling Mark off for disappearing with Rob without telling a soul. It had only occurred to him many years later that this could have been perceived as patronising. He had always mithered Mark and Rob, yet they never asked for him to be their big brother. They never asked to be mollycoddled.
With Howard everything comes easily, they’re practically the same person. Equals. With Gary he puts all that self-taught psychology to use. Friend and counsellor. But with Mark, Jason never knows where he stands. Has he any right to care enough to tell him off?
Mark likes everybody, of course. But after all those lectures and late-night talks, after all those books loaned and plasters applied...Jason didn’t want to be just one more default setting.
He remembers all this as he writes down his question: do you love me?
