Lonely At Christmas
Howard tried to open the front door as quietly as he could, tiptoeing with extra caution across the threshold then promptly tripping on his untied shoelace and crashing loudly into the wall, almost knocking down a picture on his way but catching it just in time. He lay on the floor for a few moments, holding his breath, muscles tense. Nothing seemed to move in the darkness of Jason’s house and he let out a small sigh, closing his eyes and hugging the picture to his chest as he caught his breath. Pulling himself to his feet he tried to hang the picture back in its place, smiling slightly as he saw the band staring back at him. He liked knowing how special they all were to Jason. But none of them had managed to make it to his for Christmas. Jason usually spent Christmas with his family, but events had conspired against him this year and instead it was now Christmas Eve and Jason was still all on his own. Or at least, he thought he was. Howard had other plans. Fumbling for the light-switch and taking his rucksack off his shoulder, he surveyed the room. God it was tidy. Modest Christmas decorations adorned the room, somewhat overshadowed by the vast number of Christmas cards scattered about. Time to get to work, Howard smiled.
When Jason came downstairs on Christmas day, he knew something wasn’t right. He looked around his living room with a frown on his face. A picture of the band by the front door was slightly wonky, the sofa cushions not as plump as when he’d gone to bed and a light was coming from the kitchen. Confused, he made his way into the kitchen and what he saw couldn’t fail to bring a grin to his face. A multitude of presents littered his kitchen counters as, at the kitchen table, Howard sat in front of a luxurious Christmas breakfast, a silly smile on his face. ‘I didn’t want you to be lonely’ he shrugged. That was all the excuse Jason needed cross the kitchen and throw his arms around him, feeling anything but lonely for the first time all holiday.
