More Important Than Fear
“Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear.” – Ambrose Redmoon.
He’s afraid of everything, and yet, he’s not afraid of anything. In a rare moment of stillness backstage they try and quiz him on it and all he’ll say is something about adrenaline and the benefit of time off and they all shake their heads at him fondly. Later, when he’s slinging his bag over his shoulder and heading for his car, he says he just wanted to make people smile, even if they were laughing at him not with him. Howard admires his courage, because a small part of him will always look up to Jay, as a dancer and as a human being. Mark is silently grateful – unusually, he’s been the worried one today. He calls out a ‘Night Jay’ and Jason salutes him a few times, still sporting a grin. Briefly Mark wonders if someone spiked Jay’s drink, then he remembers that Jason has been pulling dance moves out at random for the entire twenty years they've known each other. Jason takes a small hop backwards, edging to his car once more, and Mark and Howard both double check that the cameras aren’t still rolling. Gary, for his part, has been watching Jason in silence, and his lips quirk up briefly.
“You’re an idiot, you know that?” he asks softly. Jason winks at him.
“I know.” He gives Gary’s shoulder a squeeze, his eyes bright and genuine. Then, with a small nod of goodnight and a slight bounce on his heel, he’s off. For a while the three men stand there, watching him leave, trying to reconcile that quiet worrier of theirs with the showman the world has just seen.
