Shine - Skies Of America
Jason stands outside alone, one of those unreadable looks on his face, and Gary has to wonder what’s going through his head. That he’s not good enough? That he doesn’t belong here? That he wished he’d kept hold of his anonymity? Who knows. There’s so many things Gary wants to tell him. Because Gary feels the need to be responsible for them all; he feels responsible in so many ways for every member of the band. He needs to guide them, look after them, give them all shoves in the right direction. But it’s so much easier with Mark and Howard, because, and he doesn’t mean this as an insult, they are so much simpler. They think the same way as Gary does, most of the time. Hell, these days, it’s even easier for him to look after Rob. But Jason...Jason operates on some level Gary can’t quite reach. Maybe Gary’s overdoing it. Maybe Jason isn’t all that high-flown. But he certainly seems it. The way he thinks amazes Gary, he’s more than a little bit in awe of it. Coz, ok, he can string a few notes together, he can write a ballad people will be singing for decades. But on a one to one level? He’s sure he can’t touch people the way Jason can. If Gary was brave enough, the next time he heard Jason berate himself, or maybe the next time he heard him mumble something indistinct yet profound (as he so often did in the background of the melee that was this band) he would tell him that he would always shine ten times brighter than the rest of them. In Gary’s eyes he would anyway. Gary wanted to feel things the way Jason did, he wanted to see the world that way. He couldn’t find the words to tell Jason that though, so Jason carried on, unaware of his own power. Gary had never known anyone like him. So real, so down to earth and yet...so starry. Gary wanted to be the one who finally did tell him though. He wanted to be that man. He didn’t want Howard or Mark or Rob to pip him to the post. He wanted to be the one that told Jason Orange he only ever stood in sunshine. But above all? He wanted to stand in that sunshine too. With Jason by his side.
