Summertime Feeling - S Club 7
Howard sighed, stretching out in his chair and looking over at where Gary was still hard at work. It was sunny outside and Howard couldn’t be fagged with this anymore. He yawned again, louder this time. But Gary was in his ‘work zone’. No one and nothing disturbed him when he got like that. And those who tried to usually regretted it. But Howard was going stir-crazy and he had to risk it.
“Come on Gaz, slow down, take a break, we’ve got ages to finish this, can’t we just have some fun whilst the sun’s still shining?” he groaned, coming over to where Gary was sitting, stretching again and then leaning over Gary in such a way that forced him to look up.
“Dougie, I’ve seen what happens when you have fun and I’m not even going there! I keep this band in check remember. Which means I have to stay out of the papers. Go and find Jay, he won’t mind a tabloid tale or two,” Gary dismissed. Howard rolled his eyes.
“Yes he will, you know he will, they make him cringe. Come on Gaz, just come outside! Feel the sun on your skin, close your eyes, feel the day slipping by, a bit of breeze on your skin. It’ll de-stress you, take your mind off all this album-work for a bit,” he pressed.
“Have you been smoking weed...again?” Gary frowned and Howard laughed.
“No! I’m just feeling like it’s a summer day, I’m in a good mood and I want to go and enjoy it!” he grinned. He could see Gary wavering. After a while Mark and Robbie had appeared from somewhere and it didn’t take them long to join the cause. By the time Jason turned up to offer Gary some tame support it was already too late. Jason’s car was commandeered because they could take the roof down. They went for a drive and didn’t stop until Mark and Robbie both spotted an ice cream van and reverted to the age of twelve. Jason wandered off with them, determined to keep the ice-cream as far away from his car as possible, and so Howard was left sitting on the car’s bonnet with Gary. They both tipped their heads back. A small smile curled on Howard’s lips.
“This is why you shouldn’t work so hard Barlow; when was the last time you just sat like this? When was the last time you just had some fun?” he murmured and Gary paused.
“A long time ago...” he frowned. Howard looked at him fondly a moment, placing a caring hand on his arm.
“Workaholic,” he joked and Gary shrugged.
“Wasting my time I suppose?” he sighed and Howard gave his arm another squeeze.
“Gaz, you’re the backbone of this band. It’s not time wasted. Just the odd sunny day,” he smiled. They fell back into silence, both closing their eyes against the sunbeams.
“Howard?” Gary said after a while.
“Mm?” Howard sighed lazily.
“I think this has been the best damn day of this entire album,” Gary mused and Howard grinned.
“You’re welcome Gaz,” he replied.
