Shades
You don’t want me to see.
You can see just fine.
They repeat the exchange over and over. Every fifteen minutes. Jason folds his wiry frame up into the corner of the sofa and Robbie glances at him out of the corner of his eye. Those shades are a shield. Jason pulls a guitar into his lap and Robbie sighs.
How can you even see in those things?
I can see just fine.
Robbie doesn’t know if something is wrong but he wants to know. Coz Howard’s not here to look after Jason today. And Mark’s gone into his own little world. And Gary...Gary admires Jason, he does, but he can’t cope with his complexities. Robbie is second in command now. Howard told him so before he left.
Take them off.
Why?
If Howard told you to take them off?
I wouldn’t.
Yeah right. (Sullen Rob, play fair with him. You wouldn’t have taken your shades off a fair few times. He doesn’t take his own warning, mind.)
Rob.
What?
Rob!
What?!
Robbie looks up. Jason’s shades are off.
Fuck.
Nice.
No, seriously, what the fuck?! Did you sleep at all last night?
Haven’t slept all year.
You’re kidding.
Have you slept?
No.
There’s a pause and Jason’s eyes meet Robbie’s. Jason smiles slightly and shifts, offering Robbie his shades. Robbie grins back and Jason shrugs.
Hide and seek. Your turn to hide.
You can see just fine.
